Helping Hands: Assisting Others with Hospital Visits from an LCMS Perspective

Caring for the sick is a vital expression of Christian love and service. As Lutherans in the LCMS (Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod), we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ, extending His mercy to those in need. One meaningful way to do this is by assisting individuals with hospital visits.

Many people facing hospitalization experience fear, loneliness, or physical challenges that make their stay more difficult. Volunteers from the church can provide much-needed support by offering transportation, sitting with patients during procedures, or simply being present to listen and pray. Bringing Scripture, singing hymns, or sharing devotional materials can be a source of comfort and strength.

The LCMS emphasizes the importance of the pastoral office in providing spiritual care, but lay members can also play a vital role. Through Helping Hands ministries, congregations can organize visitations, deliver meals to family members, or offer respite for caregivers. These acts of mercy reflect Christ’s love and provide hope to those in distress.

By serving in this way, we live out Galatians 6:2—”Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Through faith and service, we bring light into the lives of those facing difficult times.
